Girard – Shell A. Grooms, 59 of Girard, IL passed away Friday Jan. 11, 2013 at her home.

Shell was born March 23, 1953 in Carlinville, IL the daughter of William and Lucy (Allen) Makler. Shell graduated in 1971 from Girard High School Girard, IL and worked as a floral designer for True Colors Floral Artistry in Springfield, IL. Shell married Roger D. Grooms April 3, 1971 in Nilwood, IL.

Surviving Shell is her husband Roger Grooms of Girard, IL, daughter, Jodi (Ryan) Baker and grandson, Cameron Baker of Virden, IL, sister, Sandra (Art) Gatermann of Nilwood, IL, 3 aunts and several nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceding Shell in death were her parents.

Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home is according cremation rites. A Celebration of life will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday Jan. 17, 2013 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Girard, IL with private family burial of ashes at a later date. Maxine Hartsook

Carlinville-Maxine Hartsook, 92, of Carlinville, IL, passed away at 9:30 P.M. Saturday January 5, 2013 at her residence surrounded by her loving husband and family.

Maxine was born January 13, 1920 in Modesto, IL, a daughter to Cephas and Edith (Sims) Turner.  She later married Harold Hartsook on January 4, 1942 in Virden, IL, he survives.

Maxine graduated from Virden High School, class of 1938 and was a member of the Rural Methodist Church in Carlinville, IL.

Surviving Maxine is her loving husband, Harold Hartsook; sons, Jerry Hartsook and Don (Carol) Hartsook both of Carlinville, IL, David (Linda) Hartsook of Montgomery, TX; sister, Margery McDonald of Springfield, IL; loving friend and caregiver, Jackie Hartsook, 11 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  Preceding Maxine in death are her parents and a grandson, Greg Hartsook.

Visitation for Maxine will be from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. Monday January 7, 2013 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL.  Funeral Service will be at 11:30 A.M. Tuesday January 8, 2013 at the Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home in Virden, IL with the Rev. John Curtis officiating, Pianist, Mary Lou Remling.  Pallbearers:  Darrin Hartsook, Chad Hartsook, Daniel Hartsook, Roger Montemayor, Benny Hartsook & Todd Hartsook with honorary Pallbearers, Travis Hartsook, Dustin Capps, Corey Shockley and Jesse Hartsook.  Memorials may be made to Carlinville Area Hospital, Carlinville, IL.  Burial will be in the Virden Cemetery, Virden, IL.  To leave a comment for the family, please visit:  www.calvert-ferryfuneralhomes.com

Donald “Gene” Murphy 

Girard – Gene Murphy 91, of Girard, IL passed away Wednesday Dec. 26, 2012 at Sunrise Manor, Virden, IL.

Gene was born Nov. 7, 1921 in Chandlerville, IL a son of Rufus and Grace (Sowers) Murphy. He married Betty Irene Fahs June 2, 1946 in Auburn, IL. Gene farmed and raised Angus cattle his whole life and was a member of the Farm Bureau active in the Extension Council and 4 H. He was a member and former secretary of the Illinois Angus Association and the Illinois Valley and Southwestern Angus Association.

Surviving Gene is his daughter, Marie Ellen Caldwell of Palatine, IL, his son Glenn E. Murphy of Girard, IL, and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Gene in death were his parents, his wife, Betty Murphy, his brothers, Hesten and Jay Murphy and his sisters, Patricia Randazzo and Mary Pushel.

Visitation for Gene will be from 10 a.m. until Noon Sat. Dec. 29, 2012 at Calvert & Ferry Funeral Home, Girard, IL. Funeral services will be at Noon at the funeral home with Rev. Terry Turner officiating and burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Virden, IL. Memorials may be made to the Girard Fire Department or Prairieland Ambulance.
